Fabio Fognini of Italy sends Robin Kern packing in the 1st round – Mercedes Cup 2011
The 24-year-old Italian Fabio Fognini send Robin Kern packing in their first round match at the 2011 Mercedes Cup at the Tennis Club Weissenhof in Stuttgart, Germany. The world number thirty nine, Fognini, had a speedy 6-4, 6-1
victory against the home-boy Robin Kern, winning both the sets.
Current world number thirty nine, Fogna, won twenty out of thirty three total service points giving him a sixty one percent victory along with thirteen out of thirty total return points, hence winning fifty two percent of the set
points. Whereas, the young German was not able to save any break points, his opponent managed to secure three out of four break points making it seventy five percent in the first set.
Although, Robin won eighty percent of his first-serve points he could only manage to win thirteen percent of his first return points; he delivered two double faults and one ace hence, winning only thirty points out of sixty three
points he lost to his opponent in the first set.
In the second set Fabio served zero aces, had one double fault, total service points were twelve out of seventeen making it seventy one percent and total return points were twenty out of thirty seven making it fifty four percent,
thus, total points won were thirty two out of fifty four making it a fifty nine percent win of the set. While, Kern served two aces and was only able to win twenty five percent of the first return points.
This time it was like he didn’t even want to try, and played this set awfully than the first, he lost the set 6-1. Although he administered to save seven out of ten break points he committed three double faults, out of the total
return points he barely achieved to win a twenty nine percent, and out of the total points won, he only managed to win twenty two making it forty one percent.
Overall, Robin had five double faults, only seven break points were saved out of a total of twelve making in fifty eight percent and out of a total of fifty return points he won eighteen and out of a hundred and seventeen game
points he only managed to win fifty two, a mere forty four percent.
Whereas, the Italian, Fabio Fognini served one ace, struck five double shots, won sixty four percent of his total service points and accomplished forty nine percent of total return points, thus attaining a total of sixty five points
out of a hundred and seventeen game points making it a straight two set victory over Kern.
This year, the current world number thirty nine, has played only two grand slams, the first being the Australian Open where he lost to Kei Nishikori (JPN) in the first round. However, in the second grand slam, the French Open which
was played at the Roland Garros, Fogna qualified the first four rounds and went on to play the quarterfinal against Novak Djokovic but retired before the match started due to a left leg injury.
The Italian qualifies into the next round where he will be facing the 20-year-old German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe.
