Fabio Fognini thrashes Guillermo Garcia Lopez in second round – US Open 2012
Italian challenger, Fabio Fognini, dumped Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, in straight sets at the US Open 2012 on Friday. He penned down a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory against the Spaniard to book a place in the round of 32 at this final of the four Grand Slam
events held in Corona Park in New York City, United States.
The Italian star needed one hour and 53 minutes to overpower Garcia Lopez. He failed to block both breakpoints he came across but capitalised on six out of 10 break chances to steal the limelight. Fognini also took advantage of nine double faults and clobbered
a better first serve share of 63 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 54 per cent. The Italian also hammered five aces and finished the deal with 96 points.
Fognini comfortably entered the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He smoothly held his entire serves without facing any barrier. The Italian required a single break of serve to pull out the opener with a 6-4 score line in 37 minutes.
Ranked 59th in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Fognini carried his rhythm in the follow-up set. He failed to fend off the lone breakpoint he faced but capitalised in two out of five break
chances to click the set with a 6-4 success in 46 minutes.
The 25-year-old improved his game in the third set. He lost his serve once but cashed in all three break chances, eventually sealing the set by winning six games to two in half hour.
Next in line for the Sanremo native is the former world number one, Andy Roddick, who is playing his last tournament at the Flushing Meadows. The former world number one devastated the Australian number one Bernard Tomic with a bagel to progress.
The defending champion and the second seed, Novak Djokovic will accompany Fognini in the third round. He smoothly plucked his entire serves without facing any breakpoint and capitalised on six out of 16 break chances to formulate a 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 score line.
The world number two hammered 29 winners and sealed the deal with 91 points to carve out the victory.
