Fabio Fognini upsets Viktor Troicki in the opening round – Western & Southern Open 2011
World number 16, Viktor Troicki of Serbia, became the first seeded player to crash out of the tournament, falling in the opening round of Western and Southern Financial Group Masters, at the hands of the 38th ranked
Fabio Fognini of Italy on Monday afternoon.
The unseeded Italian absolutely manhandled the 14th seeded Troicki in the contest, wrapping up victory at 6-4, 6-1, to make it to the second round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event.
The contest lasted for one hour and twenty minutes, with Fognini coming out as the winner of the match being played on the outdoor hard courts at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, near Cincinnati, United States.
Fognini put up an excellent display of professional tennis to outplay the 14th seeded Serb in straight sets. Troicki won just five games in the entire matchup and cracked in one out of four break points to let his opponent
fly away with a convincing victory. The Italian’s 59 per cent precise serve earned him 25 out of 34 first serve points in the matchup and he converted four out of his nine break opportunities en route to victory.
The opening set was off to a steady start, with both men getting their eye in the game early on. The Italian drew first blood in the sixth game to lead 4-2 but Troicki retaliated immediately with a break point to bring him down
again. Fognini’s second serve break of the day in the 10th game proved lethal for Troicki, as the Italian bagged the opening set at 6-4 to get one up in the contest. A total of 70 points were played in the first set, with Fognini winning 37 and
Troicki closely following him with 33 points.
Once clinching the opening set, Fognini turned out absolutely ballistic in the following set, launching s series of forays upon the Serb opponent. The Italian nailed two successive serve breaks right at the beginning of the second
set to rocket away to a commanding 5-0 lead. Troicki failed to make a comeback from an apparently impossible situation and was left with no option but to submit the game to the belligerent Italian opponent. Fognini claimed victory in the seventh game, settling
the score at 6-1, to get through to the second round of Cincinnati Masters.
Up next for Fognini is the American wildcard entrant, James Blake, in the second round clash. Blake cleared the opening round by defeating Marco Baghdatis of Cyprus 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, on Sunday afternoon.
