Fabio Laugeni conquers Boys 100m back-stroke semi-final: Day one –
FINA World Junior Championships
Fabio Laugeni of Italy conquered the Boys 100m back-stroke semi-final on the primary day of the 2011 Federation Internationale de Natation 3rd World Junior Championships on Tuesday, August 16, in Lima, Peru.
Laugeni earned the fastest qualification spot into the final round of the 100m event, by overwhelming the efforts of his fellow competitors in the semi-final, with a timing of 55.47 seconds. His time was 0.48 seconds slower than the championship mark of
Daniel Bell of New Zealand, who won the title of same event in a time of 54.99 seconds in 2008. Laugeni’s fastest qualification effort was also 3.53 seconds slower than the world mark of 51.94 seconds, set by Aaron Peirsol of USA in 2009.
The top qualifying swimmer was 0.11 seconds ahead of his following swimmer, Jacob Pebley of United States, who claimed the second fastest spot in the final, with a timing of 55.58 seconds. He was trailed by his team-member, Jack Conger, who was 0.15 seconds
behind Pebley and occupied third fastest spot, with a timing of 55.73 seconds.
In the meantime, Kosuke Hagino of Japan appeared on the finishing wall for fourth qualification berth, as he stayed 0.17 seconds behind Conger and posted a time of 55.90 seconds. Christian Diener of Germany was the fifth fastest swimmer to qualify for the
final, as he clocked a time of 55.94 seconds.
Subsequently, Joshua Beaver of Australia claimed sixth spot into the final round, as he was just 0.02 seconds behind Beaver and reported in a time of 55.96 seconds. He was followed by Omar Arafa of Canada, who was 0.16 seconds slower than his former swimmer
and ended his two-lap swim in a time of 56.12 seconds. Meanwhile, Henrique Machado of Brazil was the last swimmer to qualify for the final, as he concluded his swim in a time of 56.54 seconds.
The session concluded after the completion of the event, whereas, these participants will swim against each other in the final round to secure the gold medal of the respective meet.
