Fabio Scozzoli dominates Men’s 100m breaststroke semi-final - FINA Swimming Championships (25m)
Fabio Scozzoli of Italy dominated the semi-final of Men’s 100m breaststroke on initial day of the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) at Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey on Wednesday, December 12.
The Italian swimmer, who made his way into the second round as fastest swimmer, continued his astonishing pace in the semi-final and entered the playoff as top contender for the crown.
Scozzoli enjoyed an advantage of one arm-stroke over his toughest competitor as he transpired on the finishing end for first position by touching the wall with an effort of 57.66 seconds.
His impeccable pace remained 0.16 seconds ahead of Martti Aljand of Estonia, who followed him on the finishing end for second position by producing a time of 57.82 seconds.
Third best qualification spot of the race was obtained by Viatcheslav Sinkevich of Russia, who was only 0.01 seconds slower from him and completed his race in a time of 57.83 seconds.
Similarly, Sinkevich was chased by Kevin Cordes of USA, who was 0.09 seconds apart and appeared on the wall for fourth position with a timing of 57.92 seconds.
Fifth best qualifying position of the race was secured by Felipe Lima of Brazil, who was only 0.13 seconds slower from overpowering his former finisher as he ended his race in a time of 58.05 seconds.
Lima was followed by Akihiro Yamaguchi of Japan, who was only 0.10 seconds behind and tapped the wall for sixth place by clocking an effort of 58.15 seconds.
The Japanese swimmer was chased by Damir Dugonjic of Slovenia, who stayed 0.03 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and secured seventh fastest spot of the event by submitting a time of 58.18 seconds.
Subsequently, last qualification spot of the race was obtained by Mihail Alexandrov of USA, who remained lucky enough to edge out his toughest challenger and cement his place in the playoff. Alexandrov remained 0.17 seconds slower from Dugonjic and posted a time of 58.35 seconds for eighth place.
Furthermore, Scozzoli was extremely delighted with his fastest qualification effort and shared his plans of continuing the same in the final round.
