Fabio Taborre takes his second victory at Memorial Marco Pantani 2011 - Cycling Update
Acqua and Sapone team’s Fabio Taborre put in an excellent performance to take his second consecutive victory of the season after he won the Elite Men’s race at the Memorial Marco Pantani 2011 in Cesena on Saturday, October 1.
The 26-year-old Italian cyclists powered to beat the large group of 27 breakaway cyclists on a hilly climb. Davide Rebellin of Miche-Guerciotti was runner-up and Daniel Martin of Garmin-Cervelo finished third with the same timing as the Italian.
This race kept Marco Pantani alive in the hearts of his fans, who died in 2004 after his outstanding success in Giro d’ltalia and Tour de France 1998.
Giovanni Visconti (Farnese Vini-Neri Sottoli), Oleg Berdos (De Rosa-Ceramica Flaminia) and Bailetti (De Rosa-Ceramica Flaminia) were in fourth, fifth and sixth place respectively.
This race was based on the steep climb while Taborre was able to hold his pace and covered the distance of 183.7 kilometres in 4 hours, 25 minutes and 31 seconds.
With 20 kilometres to go, Nibali was the first rider who launched an attack and quickly joined the group of three cyclists including, Davide Ricci Bitti (Farnese Vini Neri Sottoli), Alberto Contoli (Colnago Csf Inox) and Davide Torosantucci (D'Angelo and
Antenucci Nippo).
All of them worked hard and opened a gap of three minutes over the peloton. Nibali continued his effort and again attacked alone as he joined a large group of 13 riders including team-mate Ivan Basso, Miche Guerciotti duo Davide Rebellin, Stefan Schumacher,
Juan Jose Cobo and Emanuele Sella (Androni-Giocattoli).
Recently, the Italian took fourth place in Trofeo Laigueglie and Trofeo Matteotti. He also won the runner-up spot in Giro della Provincia di Reggio Calabria 2010.
The chasing cyclists were able to extend their lead while a number of groups showed good strength in the front of the field. Taborre increased his pace and took the sprint ahead of Rebbellin and Martin. Marco Marzano (Lampre-ISD) was in good form and tried
to gain points but failed and took 19th spot with a difference of 6 seconds ahead of Vincenzo Nibali.
