Fabiola Pulga Molina pockets Women’s 50m back-stroke gold: Day one – Brazilian Open LC Championships
Fabiola Pulga Molina of MINAS TC dictated terms to her competitors and pocketed the title of Women’s 50m back-stroke on opening day of the 2011 Brazilian Open Long Course Championships in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, December 15.
The 36-year-old Pulga Molina remained unimaginable ahead of her challengers in the single lap back-stroke event. With her persistent efforts, she seized the podium for gold medal by reporting in a wonderful time of 28.25 seconds.
Her title claiming effort remained just 0.05 seconds slower than the championship mark of 28.20 seconds, set by Molina in 2009. She was also 1.19 seconds behind the world record of 27.06 seconds, made by Jing Zaho of China at the 2009 World Championships
in Rome.
The gold medallist was chased by Natalia Mendes Diniz of ECP/SABESP, who remained 0.94 seconds slower than the gold medallist and ended her swim in a time of 29.19 seconds for silver medal.
She was followed by Etiene Pires Medeiros of NN SESI CPR, who was 0.08 seconds slower than her former finisher and appeared on the finishing end with a third fastest timing of 29.27 seconds. Medeiros remained in a lead of 0.30 seconds over her subsequent
rival, Daynara Ferreira Paula of MINAS TC, who occupied fourth fastest spot of the race by posting an effort of 29.57 seconds.
The 22-year-old Paula was trailed by Taiane Carnot Noda of UNAERP, who stayed 1.66 seconds behind her preceding swimmer and hit the wall with a timing of 31.23 seconds for fifth position. Noda stayed 0.02 seconds ahead of Paula’s team-member, FERNANDA NUNES
ALVARENGA, who earned sixth position of the event by reporting a time of 31.25 seconds.
Naira N De Saturno of CRF/RJ ended her swim in seventh fastest place by clocking a time of 31.88 seconds. She remained 0.11 seconds ahead of her team-mate, Marianna P V Terto, who settled as eighth position holder with an effort of 31.99 seconds.
The session ended after the gruelling efforts of all finalists in their exclusive events whereas the position holders collected their accolades at the medal ceremony of the championship.
