The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 skipper has spoken for his side’s biggest rivals and has defended their stance on not offering Santiago Bernabeu to host the Copa del Rey final.
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 midfielder was found signing a Real Madrid jersey recently as he expressed his views regarding the venue of the Copa del Rey final which will take place between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao.
Despite the fact that Santiago Bernabeu was considered an ideal venue, the RFEF decided not to choose it for the prestigious event.
The Spanish capital-based club have received a fair amount of criticism in not allowing the final to take place in their home stadium.
Despite the fact that the Spanish giants have offered several explanations for not allowing the final to take place there, many experts believe it is not suitable for a club of Real Madrid’s stature to take an action such as this.
Among their concerns was an incident which took place the last time La Blaugrana took on Bilbao in the crowning match of the tournament. The match took place at Valencia’s Mestalla and the Spanish national anthem was booed by both sets of supporters.
The Catalans and the Basques are known to carry sentiments of separatism and have put Spanish national integrity at stake more than once.
However, Madrid’s primary concern could be the fact that they may have to witness their traditional foes lift the trophy at the Santiago Bernabeu.
To add fuel to the fire, Los Blancos were among the teams that Barca eliminated on their road to the final.
Hence, Fabregas has commented that he understands the decision made by the Real management and has chosen to defend it.
While talking to the reporters, the Spanish international was quoted as saying:
"I fully understand the position of Real Madrid. Nobody would like to see their biggest rival lift a title on their own field."
Real Madrid are currently leading the Spanish La Liga points table with a 10-point gap over Barcelona. However, La Blaugrana have qualified for the final of the Copa del Rey at the expense of Los Blancos.
Both the teams are currently a part of the UEFA Champions League and have the chance to win a European double.
