Fabrice Martin outclasses Rainer Schuettler to reach the quarterfinal – Open Castilla y Leon 2011 CH
Another surprised result on the third day of Open Castilla y Leon, with the fourth seeded German competitor, Rainer Schuettler, crashing out of the second round matchup against the special exempt contestant, Fabrice Martin of France,
on Wednesday afternoon.
The contest took place on the hard courts of Segovia, Spain, with the Frenchman exhibiting his magnificent tennis skills to outplay the fourth seeded German in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-0, to make a place in the quarter-finals of
the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event. The fourth seeded German hung in the contest for one hour and twelve minutes before he succumbed to his ballistic opponent in the second set of the match.
Martin and Schuettler went on neck-to-neck in the opening set to impose a tie breaker round, which was clinched by the Frenchman to get the early advantage in the game. The second set of the match was a great show of sheer dominance
from Martin, who absolutely blew away the fourth seeded German from the competition to move into the round of eight of the tournament.
The French cracked in 10 fiery aces, with his opponent registering merely two in the entire matchup to finish on the losing side. His 71 per cent precise serve earned him 32 out of 36 first serve points in the game and he cashed
in three out of 10 break opportunities en route to victory, without facing a single break point in the whole match.
The opening set took off with commanding aggression from both men and exchanges of assertive winners were seen on regularity. None of the players cracked in a serve break and the scores got dead locked at 6-6, enforcing a mandatory
tie breaker round into play. Martin proved too good for the fourth seeded German in the decider and bagged the opening set at 7-6(5), to get one up in the contest.
More intense tennis was anticipated in the following set but Schuettler went through a terrible slump in the second set and failed to hold serve even in a single game. Martin nailed three consecutive break points to dispose of
Schuettler from the contest in the most authoritative manner, clinching the second set at 6-0.
Martin moves into the quarter-final of the Open Castilla y Leon, where he will play against his fellow compatriot, Gregoire Burquier, for a spot in the semi-finals of the tournament.
