Fabrizio Zanotti shares the lead at the BMW International Open
Fabrizio Zanotti, from Paraguay, fired an eight-under par 64 in the opening round of the BMW International Open, at the Golf Club Gut Larchenhof, to share the top spot on Thursday, June 21, 2012.
Zanotti got off to a confident start and recorded five birdies against a lone bogey on the front nine to go four-under for the round.
The back nine of the course witnessed him sign two birdies and two eagles between the 11th and 16th hole, allowing him to take the sole lead with a 10-under par score.
However, he faltered on the final hole of the day and recorded a double bogey to slip down to 64, to share the top position with Marcus Fraser.
“I made a lot of good putts today and the only bad shot I hit was in taking a double bogey,” he said. “It is very good for me to share the lead in a big tournament like this and it helps me getting used to it”.
Chris Wood, Danny Willett and Paul McGinley recorded a seven-under par 65 each to tie for the third place on the leaderboard.
McGinley recorded an impressive eagle and a birdie on the final three holes to end the round on a high note.
In a post-round presentation, he said that the good finish turned his good round into a great round in the end.
In the meantime, John Daly, the winner of 2001 edition of the event, recorded a four-under par 68 to tie for the 18th position.
Daly gave credit of his good form to his long-time friend Lance Awe, who gave him a few tips on putting, prior to the start of the tournament.
“I have pretty much loosened up my grip on everything and particularly the putter, so as to get more feel,” Daly said. “Lance caddied for me at the Colonial and a few other events, and said ‘Why don’t you do what you did when you were 16?’ so I figured I
would take his advice”.
In addition to that, he also had a five wood in his bag that he never used in his career in the past.
