Faceoffs...?

Question

Does anybody know the history behind faceoffs? I do know that at one time the puck was just laid on the ice with the faceoff happening just as the linesman moved his hand. Sometime during the early years they went to the "drop" faceoff. Where did this first occur and in what year? Thanks if you have any info.

Not positive about this, but I think when they changed from Montreal Rules to Halifax Rules.
