Question:

Factoring Trinomials - Help!?

by  |  earlier

So, first day of the school year and I'm already having math trouble (it would help if the teachers I had before this one had better prepared me for this...). Anyway, does anyone know how to factor the following trinomials?

x^2 + 6xy +8y

3m^2n^2 + 11mn + 6

I can solve trinomials that are more simple than this, but the "xy" in the first problem and all the ^2s in the second problem confuse me.

Please help!

  1. For the second problem you can just imagine that mn is 1 variable-  X

Can you solve 3x^2 +11x+6?  Then just replace the x with mn for your final answer.

  2. x^2 + 6xy +8y

    =x^2+4xy+2xy+8y

    =x(x+4y)+2y(x+4y)

    =(x=4y)(x+2y)

    3m^2n^2 + 11mn + 6

    =3m^2n^2 +9mn+2mn+6

    =3mn(mn+3)+2(mn+3)

    =(mn+3)(3mn+2)

Try to concentrate on the middle term.1st identify the middle term that can be broken into two parts so that the factoring can be done.

1st multiply the coefficients of the other two. and try to break the mddle term into two parts such that multiplication of the coefficients of the broken part shulb be equal to the multiplication of the coefficients of the other two.
