Factoring without using quadratic formula?

3x^2+5x+4 you would factor this by multiplying the 3 by 4 so 12 what multiplies to give you 12 and adds to give you 5 than u continue.. but what if it was (1/3)x+5x+6 since there is a fraction in front can you do the same thing or do u have to multiply everything by 3?
