  1. 1. Peer pressure can lead to accidents, if the driver feels compelled to "perform" because of the company he is in.

    2. Gender expectations: Generally, males feel compelled to "perform" while driving a car more so than females. However, the gap is narrowing!

    3. Passenger safety is of course, affected whenever a driver succumbs to gender or peer pressures, or just "shows how good" they are. Driving with passengers requires a desire to get the passengers to a destination unharmed.

    4. Media images such as vehicle "x" by manufacturer "y" being able to safely overtake a semi- trailer where it is inferred no other vehicle can do it, are an extremely dangerous thing. Trying to imitate what is shown can obviously be extremely dangerous both for a driver alone, or one under gender or peer pressures.

Strategies that could be employed include stopping manufacturers producing misleading imagery, discontinuation of manufacture of excessively powerful engines, introduction of technology that will report excessive speed to authorities. But above all, the education of drivers to attempt to remove the image of a vehicle as some sort of God, and to replace this with an image of a vehicle that is used simply to transport from A to B. Add to this, a belief that a vehicle should be "green" and driven in a "green" manner.

There is a lot more could be said.

  2. Kids and teens face pressures from their peer group on a regular basis. These pressures can lead kids to experiment with activities and behavior they might not otherwise consider. Through teaching refusal skills, we help them learn to stay strong and do what they know is right.

    1. Discuss kinds of things friends may encourage us to do that go against or own beliefs/values.

    2. Discuss different styles of those who try to pressure. Do they threaten to withhold a friendship? Do they insult you or call you names? Do they try to make you feel that you have to do it in order to “be cool?” Do they keep bugging you about it even after you’ve said no? Get examples from the class.

    3. Discuss different ways that kids can respond to peer pressure.

    Say no over and over

    Say no and leave

    Change the subject

Ignore the person and walk away

    Suggest an alternative.

    Suggest they do it alone.

    Say you’re not allowed.

Give a reason why you can’t.

Give a reason why it’s a dumb idea.

Go hang out with someone else.
