The sport of horse racing has become synonymous with betting. The industry thrives on relentlessly training the horses so that they perform well each season in order to win races.
Their performances lay the foundations of the betting system. The thrill and excitement that is generated from a race event has much to do with the winnings associated with each race. But betting is a skill in itself, and like the horse that undergoes years
of persistent training, you also have to make yourself an expert of the racing industry to be a successful bettor.
Following are a list of factors you should consider before you pick a race horse to bet on. They will help you make sound judgment through proper analysis and ensure that your purse is heavier than when you came in for a race.
Length of the track
The first thing to think about is the distance to be run at a race. Different horses will perform better at different distances. Some horses may sprint well but may not necessarily have the stamina to run for long periods. There are greater chances of error
when the race has to go on for a longer time. The horse rider may slip off, the horse may get tired and a collision between the contestants may occur, among other things. Generally, a distance of not more than five furlongs or three miles is ideal for betting
in any horse race.
Number of horses
Quite obviously, the greater the number of race horses, the lesser the probability of any one horse to win. Therefore, check out the number of runners in a horse race that you want to bet in. It becomes difficult to place a good bet when the field is big
and determining the odds becomes complicated. So unless you are on the top of the betting game, it is wise to bet in a race where the participating horses are not a lot.
Track conditions
Another very important factor detrimental to the betting system is the track conditions. Tracks not well made will reduce the speed of the steed and consequently hinder performance. Gather information about the smoothness or firmness of the track and see
if the ground is soft or heavy. Horses perform better on tracks that make their running effortless.
Time elapsed since the last race
It is widely understood that the past of a race horse is not important but its current performance is. Do not waste your time checking up a horses last season’s race stats, just focus on the last race. You can determine the performance level of a horse by
looking at its previous performance. However, the last race of the horse should not be more than about 28 days ago. If the time period is longer than that, then it becomes difficult to rate the performance level of the horse.
The form of the horse
A fair enough idea can be gotten about the potential and capability of a horse by checking out its form. Horses that are good performers usually have ‘Cs’ and ‘Ds’ indicated in their forms. A ‘C’ means that the horse has been a winner over a certain track
in the previous races, whereas a ‘D’ indicates that the horse has been a winner over the distance being run in the race. Therefore, if you come across these letters in the form of the horse you want to place a bet on, there is a good chance that you might
be a winner.
These were some of the basic factors that you should have in mind while selecting the horse to bet on. If you have evaluated them properly, your chances of placing a winning bet will increase tremendously.
