Acrophobia (fear of heights) is in the top ten list of phobias in all references I could find, usually coming in at 6 or 7.  Arachnophobia seems to be the most common.  A generalised discomfort with heights is very common, amongst other mammals too, but acrophobia is the term for when the fear becomes debilitating.  The only reference I could find on the percentage of population was 2-5% of the population have fear of heights so severe that it disrupts their lives.

Nearly all of us have discomfort of heights but the height and the surroundings that makes us uncomfortable is different for each of us.
