Facundo Arguello plonks Michael Linzer in round one – AON Open 2012 CH

Argentinean rising star, Facundo Arguello, tumbled the Austrian challenger, Michael Linzer, in straight sets at the AON Open 2012, an outdoor clay court tournament held in Genoa, Italy. He summed up a 6-4, 7-5 victory against the world number 247 to advance into the second round on Tuesday.

The Argentine broke his opponent’s serve four times to bag this match in their first meeting. He required one hour and 39 minutes stealing the limelight and progress into the round of 16 at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event taking place from 3rd to 9th September.

The 20-year-old made a powerful entry on the Italian dirt. He drew the first blood in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. Arguello levelled the scores in the sixth game but remained calm after that. He got the breakthrough in the ninth game and clicked the opener with a 6-4 win. The Argentinean failed to block the lone breakpoint he encountered and converted two out of four break chances to his advantage.

Ranked 220th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Arguello maintained his intensity towards the following set. He got the desiderated break in the opening game and jumped to a 2-0 lead. The Argentinean squandered his edge in the 10th game but broke Linzer’s serve again in the very next game, eventually sealing the set by winning seven games to five. He amazingly fended off two out of three breakpoints he came across and capitalised on two out of five break chances.

Overall, the Argentine committed five double faults and more errors. He also produced a lower first serve share of 59 per cent as opposed to his opponent’s 64 per cent but spectacularly clinched 28 out of 32 points on it.

Next challenge for Arguello is the conqueror of the match between top seed Andreas Seppi and Arguello’s compatriot, Renzo Olivo.

Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol from Spain will accompany the Argentine in the following round. The Spaniard crushed Slovakia’s Kamil Capkovic with a breadstick to advance. He lost his serve twice but capitalised on five out of 13 break opportunities to formulate a 6-4, 6-1 success.
