Facundo Bagnis, Eduardo Schwank move into quarterfinal – Aguascalientes Open 2011 CH
Fourth seeded Argentine Facundo Bagnis moved into the quarterfinal round of the 2011 Aguascalientes Open on the ATP Challenger Tour on Thursday, 29th September in Mexico after doing away with American Adam El Mihdawy
in straight sets.
The pair battled for only seventy minutes before the Argentine raced on ahead into the quarterfinal with a 6-4, 6-2 win.
Winning the toss, the American opened service in the first set and comfortably put himself on the scoreboard followed shortly by Bagnis. Attuned to the clay courts, Bagnis kicked into high gear as he broke Mihdawy in the third
game to lead 2-1. However, the American broke back immediately to level the score at two games each. The exchange of break being the only high point of the match, the score progressed on even terms for the next four games as both players successfully held
onto their serves.
Although Bagnis hit his own four double faults, the American’s one extra gave the Argentine the lucky break he was hoping for. Capitalizing off the American’s error in the ninth game, Bagnis secured a lucky break as he went 5-4
in the score. Serving out the tenth game, Bagnis clinched a 6-4 victory going one up in the set score.
Putting up an impregnable defence, Bagnis saved two of three breakpoints while converting hundred percent of them to his own advantage. Although he hit no aces, double faulted considerably, Bagnis managed to secure an acceptable
76 percent win on his first serve to lead the set score.
Maintaining his form in the second set, Bagnis was determined to secure a straight sets win. The game progressed on even terms initially as both players held onto their serves successfully. Standing at 2-2, Bagnis squandered seven
of nine breakpoint opportunities to his advantage, as he broke his opponent twice before serving for the match at 5-2. Finally getting in an ace in the match, Bagnis clinched a 6-2 win in the second set sealing his straight sets win.
The Argentine now moves on ahead to play his fifth seeded compatriot, Eduardo Schwank in the quarterfinal of the event.
Schwank continued his ascent at the event after securing a simple, straight sets win over another American, Kevin Kim.
Toiling for seventy minutes, Schwank put up a similar display as Bagnis, as he secured a 6-3, 6-2 win over the lower ranked American.
The fifth seed struck five aces with only two double faults and a 77 percent win on his first serve to secure a straight sets win and a berth in the quarterfinal round.
