Facundo Bagnis sails past Agustin Velotti into final eight – Uruguay Open 2011 CH
Two Argentinean players battled in Montevideo to determine who plays the quarterfinals of the 2011 Uruguay Open. Argentinean Facundo Bagnis played against compatriot Agustin Velotti on November 17, 2011 in the second round men’s
singles competition. The pair battled for one hour and forty minutes, before Bagnis emerged as the victor with a 7-6(6), 6-2 win.
As the first set began, Bagnis took a lead by scoring points with two aces. He did not concede any double fault for his controlled shots. Velotti, on the other hand, could not score any ace and did concede a double fault once in
the set.
Bagnis, who ranks at the world number 153rd spot, led the first set with his decent serves as he had a 71% first serve winning rate. Velotti, ranked at the 347th spot in the world, could only secure a 54%
first serve winning rate. Bagnis, who played the qualifying round at the 2011 French Open, his first Grand Slam, won 79% first serve winning ratio. His second serve points reduced as he could win 50% points from his second serve. Velotti, who also played the
2011 French Open qualifying rounds, was not up to the mark with his serves. He would win 69% points from his first serve and managed to win 59% points from his second.
Both players were exceptionally well in the first set when it came to saving their breakpoints. All of Bagnis’ games were played with a decent flow, which did not let his opponent break his serves. Velotti, on the other hand, saved
all four of his breakpoints, which kept him alive in the opening set as it entered into a tiebreaker. Velotti fought well but could not contain Bagnis from winning the set, 7-6(6).
As the match entered into the second set, none of the players could win any points from their aces. They did, however, conceded a double fault once in the set. Bagnis had a 62% first serve winning rate while Velotti was trailing
close behind by securing a 57% winning rate. Bagnis, who has a 48/41 win/loss ratio in the ATP circuit, had much more experience under his belt to counter all of Velotti’s attacking shots. Velotti, on the other hand, who has a 5/6 win/loss ratio in ATP division
was the clear underdog as his efforts went futile in securing a lead in the second set.
Bagnis won 63% points from his second serve and use the tennis court and his shots to gain momentum, while Velotti could not play his natural shots for Bagnis’ intimidating stance did not let Velotti settle in. Velotti could only
win 22% points from his second serve and failed to gain any advantage during the match to obtain a lead. He could only win two games as Bagnis sailed into the quarterfinals of the tournament by winning the second set 6-2.
