Facundo Bagnis undoes compatriot Diego Schwartzman in 2nd round – Quito Challenger 2011
Sixth seeded Argentine Facundo Bagnis did away with compatriot Diego Sebastian Schwartzman in the second round of the 2011 Quito Challenger in Ecuador on Thursday, 20th October. The higher ranked Argentine took an hour
and twenty eight minutes to secure a straight 6-2, 7-6(8) victory over his lower ranked compatriot.
Playing each other for the first time, Bagnis moved on ahead with relatively much ease as he secured a simple straights win over Schwartzman.
Winning the toss, Schwartzman opened serve. However, the sixth seed rushed into a lead as he broke his compatriot in the very first game to 2-0 in the score. From there on the pair continued to win on respective serves as Bagnis
maintained his two game edge. Capitalising on another break opportunity in the seventh game, Bagnis broke his opponent to go 5-2 in the lead before serving out the set to clinch a 6-2 win and a lead in the set score.
Bagnis hit five aces to Schwartzman’s zero along with two double faults and a 79 percent win on his first serve to go one up in the set score.
Down but not out, Sebastian bounced back in the second set. Saving one breakpoint each and capitalising on none from their opponent, the pair matched blow for blow as they kept the scoreboard levelled at all times. The neck to
neck run continued as the pair held onto their serves, forcing the set into a tiebreaker.
The tooth and nail battled ensued well into the tiebreaker, as neither player would let up. Tied for ten points, neither player was able to make any headway into the tiebreaker. It was only on the eleventh point that Bagnis caught
a lucky break and reeled off two straight points to clinch a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker, sealing his straight sets victory.
Bagnis now moves into the quarterfinal round where he will play the unseeded German, Andre Begemann. The German upset top seeded Frenchman Eric Prodon in the second round to make it to the final eight.
Begemann took nearly one hour and thirty seven minutes, as he hit four aces, three double faults and a seventy percent win on his first serve to survive two enthralling tiebreakers, clinching a 7-6(5), 7-6(7) win over the Frenchman.
