I'm 20 years old and have not been living for my parents since i was 18, i currently attend a CSULB, and was wondering how it would be possible for myself to file as independent,.. but the fafsa website wont let me since, im not 23 or enrolled in the army and whatever-now else..

Basically all my friends live with their parents..and receive thousands for their education.. and I dont qualify for any funding from the gov. since my parents "earn too much"..

and my parents wont help me with college, since im independent.. so im simply taking out loans..

Long story short.. how is it possible to receive money from fafsa,..

and please Send real answers.. and i also know of scholarships, and grants,, but im not interested in those @ the moment,... any feedback would be really helpful thank you.

  1. This happened to my sisters friend.  Her parents had basically disowned her, but she was too young to qualify as independant.  (She was only 18.)

Ask the school about appealing.  You'll need to fill out LOTS of paperwork, and usually have people write letters of recommendation stating you are telling the truth, and explaining why they feel you should qualify as independant.  Good luck!

  2. I don't know I am in the same boat, I have been out of my parents house since I was 17, they do not support me in anyway. I just filled out the application with 0's for the parents and just put my information in, it probably won't go through but I don't know what else to do. If I found some more information out I will let you know !! Just wanted to let you know your not the only one having this problem!

  3. you can have an appeal of your status.  Go to your school  and ask them for the papers to appeal your current status.  You will need some compelling circumstances, so if you don't make some sob story up.  It is a bunch of **** and made that way to weed out the people that are lying but it will be worth it!
