Fafsa. Do my parents need a pin?

Hey do both my parents need a pin or just one? Or is it even necessary for them to get a pin because i already have one and started the application.

  1. Only 1 parent needs a pin. If they have one from an older sibling who filed the FAFSA, their pin from that will be fine.


  2. Atleast one parent has to have the PIN.  It will serve as their electronic signature.  To apply just go to the PIN website and you can even get it instantly.  Just go to www.pin.ed.gov click on apply now then fill out information..they will come up with their own pin number and then they can just use that to sign the FAFSA.

  3. Only one of your parents needs a pin.  It is only necessary for them to get a pin if you're not married.  If you are married your parents don't need a pin because you are considered to be independent.  It is still necessary for one to get their pin even though you have one for yourself.  You can save your application and return to completed online if you still need to get one of your parents pin number.
