Question:

Fafsa....HELP!?

I have a stepdad who has not lived with, nor provided any support for me and my family for over 3 years. My mom and him are still married, and file jointly, but they don't live together.

This is my problem: He made over 100k last year. I don't get a dime of that; no medical, dental or college tuition. My mom made 40k which she supports me (age:17) and my two older brothers (age:21 and 23).

If I apply for the fafsa I won't get anything. Is there anyway around my stepdad's huge income?

Every adult that I know has little or very bad credit. So a loan with a cosigner is pretty much not an option.

  2. well if he doesn't live with you, nor provide anything for you isn't he suppose to give you or your mom child support? Or something like that? Have you tried talking to your school counselor?(if you go to high school; I'm guessing)

    GOOD LUCK!

  3. they will help you even if you dont have good credit. they will get you a loan. and make you pay it back after six months of graduation! =D just use your mom and tell them your situation. and to begin with they are not supposed to be filing together if they dont live together! it just dont make sense! oh well if the IRS finds out they will be in some ****!

  4. There is a question on the fafsa that asks if they are seperated.  Ask your mom if they are legally seperated.

Also, be sure to put the correct number of people in the household.  Yourself, your mother, and BOTH of your older brothers if they are in college AND can answer all of the dependency questions as NO.

Also include yourself as a college student and your brothers, again if they could answer NO to all of the dependency questions.  Don't forget your step dad as a household member if you are also reporting his income.  (Following these instructions is VERY important!  Not having the correct "number in household" and number in college makes a big difference when calculating aid.  It obviously costs more to feed a fam of 5 than 3.  Don't forget you may include them in the household (even if they don't live there) in some situations.  Like they are dependents in college, or you are required to report their income.

    Hope this helps.  Good luck.

  5. Use their Tax filing to your advantage.

    They are filing Jointly

So more then likely he claims you..

    Force him to pay.

If not, you are screwed without getting your mom and him into trouble by telling them he doesnt live with you or support you or your mother.  They file jointly they they are commiting Tax Evasion and that will land them both in hot water.

Those 2 breaking the law has ruined you unless you do something about it.
