So here's the deal. My WONDERFUL father decided that he was going to just NOT pay off any of the loans from when he recently went to college(did he even finish?NO). So now...Five years later...One month before I'm supposed to leave for college We get this letter in the mail saying that he's being sewed for all the **** he didn't bother to pay for. Now here's the deal...Fafsa won't consider me as an independent until I'm 24, have a child, or get married. Meaning I have to be under his name and his wonderful credit. I literally have NO money because neither of my parents ever bothered to save up for this...Guess they never thought I'd actually go. Now here I am with no money, no scholarships, and probably no loans. Thanks dad...Thanks. Any advice on what I can do to get myself out of this situation?

  1. Your Dad's bad credit will not hinder you from taking out federal student loans at all.  Loans like the Stafford and the Perkins loans are in YOUR name with your social security number, not his.

Just make sure you do a fafsa and you will be okay.  If you need MORE money than what you can borrow under the federal programs either 1.  Find a cheaper school or 2. have your Mom take out a PLUS (parent) loan for you.

  2. Use your mothers name, if her credit is even better...with fafsa, the less money u have, the more money u'll get, so that mite b a good thing 4 u, my friends live in a single parent home with 3 kids...and their twin goin 2 college, their mother was broke, they filled out fafsa and now they only have 2 pay $9 each...no lie, and they only had 1 $200 loan

  3. community college

  4. You can always get grants from your state.  There are many scholarships out there you just have to apply.  I would recommend not going to one of the colleges you see on tv because they often charge over $10,000 for the time you are there.  Go to a community college and go visit their financial aid office and counselors to see what you can do.

  5. FAFSA has to do with how much money your parents make and how much they will be expected to pay towards your education.  It has nothing to do with their credit.  Even though they have bad credit, you can talk to the people at the college in the financial aid office and they will be able to help you.  Fill out the FAFSA at the college you plan to attend. You will need tax information from your parents.  If you really want to go to college, it can be done.

  6. My mother wouldn't even SIGN my FAFSA.............

They can both sign your FAFSA, though I would highly recommend having your mother sign it.  Fill it out and see what happens.  They can't turn YOU down for something your father did.  Based on your success in high school, the government is only willing to help you, not your retarded father.

Try asking someone else to cosign any loans for you.  Your mother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, whoever.
