I filled out the entire application at fafsa.com, submitted it, paid $80. I felt like an idiot when I found out that the correct website is http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. Can someone tell me what the h**l this website is that I just sent my confidential information to? I know now that it is not affiliated with the Department of Education. But is it a fraud site? It looks way too legit and shows up at the top of search engines. If it were a fraud site it seems like the government would have stepped in and taken it down by now. Please let me what this site is and where my information just went.

  1. Did you use your credit card? if so maybe you can contact the three credit scoring companies and put a watch for fishy items on your credit report so you can dispute them.  Hopefully you will get this straighten out. Sounds like they where phishing to me.

  2. You need to contact fafsa.com and politely ask for your money back, that you didn't realize that fafsa stood for "FREE" Application for Federal Student Aid.

They should  give it to you. It is run by a retired financial aid director who justifies his site by saying that the site says they aren't affiliated with the Dept of Ed (like this makes it okay).  Also, I would suggest you contact the Better Business Burea as well and complain they are impersonating a legit Federal website.

  3. Filing a FAFSA is free.

Across the top of fafsa.com it states THIS SITE IS NOT AFFILIATED WITH THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.

It is a site that helps subscribers navigate through the FAFSA filing, which can appear daunting, but is not.

The long and short of it is that you were taken in. Given the disclaimer at the top of the page, I don't think you have much recourse.

You do, however, need to make sure that you FAFSA did end up in the hands of the Dept. of Education so that you can be considered for aid.

You were probably given a confirmation number or a PIN. Call 1.866.514.5948 (the scammers) and make sure your application was processed correctly.
