Question:

Failed MOT - driveshaft?

by  |  earlier

My 2001 Vauxhall Corsa failed its MOT because of the problem with the driveshaft.

Not to sound too girly but what is this and is £200 the norm for having it replaced?

Also they mentioned one of the tyres was on wrong, it should have been a left not a right or something but the car has had the tyres on for 3 years and 3 passed MOT's prior to this one of mine...are they trying to s***w me over?

Serious answers please, thanks.

  1. some tyres are ''handed''...fitted wrong they can cause it to handle bad especially in the wet.other mot testers havent done there job in the past....as for the drive shaft most likely its just the cv boot, there only £6 to buy.

  2. It will be your ball joint that is on it,s way out not your drive shaft ,and the price is about right.

there are no right or left tyres, the tyres will fit left or right .

  3. £200 for the drive shaft is an OK price, most of that will be labour. Chances are your previous MOT testers have not been very observant and only checked the tyres for tread depth.

  4. Ok starting with the tire, modern cars have a direction of rotation preference. Normally this is indicated on the side of the tire with a arrow. Sounds like the MOT tester has been very diligent with the inspection of the tire this time.

The drive shaft has probably spilt the CV joint rubber gator, when you drive the car and turn the steering wheel to turn do you have a knocking sound from the front?

If not them the £200 is high as the joint is probably still OK. If it is knocking then a new drive shaft fitted for £200 is about right.

    Ja.

  5. 200 quid for a drive shaft (the bit that goes from the engine to the wheel to make it go around) is normal

take the car to a tyre place, but if the tyre says Right and its on the left, they can fail it. Put the spare on.

  6. only reason drive shaft fails MOT is the C.V boot split.Cost about 8 quid and 20 minutes to fit.Tyres are marked with direction of rotation (sometimes) so swap it to other side on same axle And as for s******g you are you very pretty?

  7. Don't see them very much but some tyres do have fancy tread paterns that dictate the direction of rotation, if you have these tyres there will be an arrow stating direction of rotation.
