Fair Lawn boys volleyball team defeats Wallington to win the Bergen County tournament
Thursday turned out to be a good day for Fair Lawn boys volleyball team as they were able to secure the Bergen County tournament boys volleyball championship again.
This is not the first time that Fair Lawn has been able to achieve this credit for themselves, rather, it marks the third consecutive time that the Cutters have bagged themselves the champions title.
Not only did the Cutter win the championship match, they did so by handing out a defeat to Wallington in a clean sweep. The two back-to-back sets that the Cutters won for themselves were secured by comfortable margins. By the time that the Cutters had started
celebrating their well deserved win by cheering along with their supporters present at the gym while Wallington was heading out of the courts with heavy hearts, the scoreboard narrated the happenings of the event by displaying the following final set scores,
25-8, 25-11.
With their recent win, the number one ranked Fair Lawn team now boasts of a total of 31 victories in this season so far. These wins have been bagged at the commendably low cost of incurring only two defeats in the season overall. In contrast to the performance
statistics of the Cutters, the overall season record of the number two ranked Wallington team falls pale. The numbers of wins that Wallington has been able to register in this season are 17. These victories have been tallied at the expense of suffering a total
of five losses in all.
The start of the first set of the game laid the tone for the rest of the match. The Cutters were able to come out strong by taking an early lead and pressurize Wallington from the beginning. Not only did the Cutters take the lead early on, they were able
to extend their advantage until 12-4. Wallington was able to slow down the Cutters and close in the gap at 16-8. However, that was all that Wallington was able to manage as the Cutters bagged the opening set at 25-8.
Capitalizing on the momentum built after winning the first set, it was not a tough job for the Cutters to keep Wallington at bay and take the second set at 25-11.
When the match had ended and Fair Lawn was declared as the champions, the Cutters Coach Peter Zisa made the following comments about his team, “We prepared very well in practice and this is the positive result we get out of it. But this is only the first
of a three-pronged preseason goal for us. We’ve got the counties down, now we want to go after the league and then the state championship. We don’t want to settle for anything less than that.”
