Fair Lawn defeats St. Peter’s by 2-0 in Southern Regional semi-finals – Volleyball
Fair Lawn boys volleyball team was able to hand out a defeat to St. Peter’s Prep on Tuesday by making a clean sweep over them. Not only was Fair Lawn able to win the semi final of the Southern Regional tournament by bagging two back to back sets, each set
was won with an overwhelming margin as shown by the following final set scores: 25-14 and 25-8.
Fair Lawn is up against the number six ranked Southern Regional team in the final that is scheduled to be played on Thursday. The first serve is planned to take place at South Brunswick, the same place where the two semi-finals were held.
Fair Lawn will be entering the courts at the final with considerable confidence as they have a good overall season record to back them up with a total of 36 victories and only two defeats. In comparison, St. Peter’s has been able to secure 22 victories in
this season so far while having to suffer six defeats.
Lorenzo Samin of St. Peter commented on his team’s performance during the loss and said, "They came out tough and we came out a little scared. They took advantage of that. We have a lot of underclassmen. Now they know what it takes to get here, and hopefully
learn from it and carry on our legacy."
The first set of the game saw Fair Lawn take the lead for themselves early on at 9-2. Once they had the lead, St. Peter’s could not do much to stop Fair Lawn from extending it. As Fair Lawn got further ahead, the pressure kept on increasing on St. Peter,
who were not doing a good job of competing. Fair Lawn still had the lead with themselves at the final stages of the set with St. Peter’s trailing far behind at 21-8. As a result, it was fairly easy for Fair Lawn to bag the opening set of the game at 25-14.
Fair Lawn started off the second set of the game with a highly motivated attitude which worked wonders in the way they played the game. St. Peter’s was no match for the relentless attack and tough defense that Fair Lawn had put up. They were able to take
the lead at 7-2 which they extended to 16-7. Amid a couple of half-hearted attempts by St. Peter’s that added a few more points to their side of the score board, Fair Lawn was able to win by bagging the second set of the game at 25-8.
Dan Nugent stood prominent in Fair Lawn’s onslaught of St. Peter’s by posting a total of 16 kills for his team. Nugent was helped by Oren Zyndorf who was able to add 14 points made on service.
