Fair Lawn wins State Championship by beating Southern Regional 2-0: Volleyball news
Fair Lawn boys volleyball team was able to hand out a well earned defeat to Southern Regional on Thursday in the final of the State Championship. Fair Lawn was able to obtain the championship title by making a clean sweep over their rivals at the following
final set scores: 25-17 and 25-23.
Southern Regional took a long time coming into form in the first set that consequently cost them the game. But the second set of the match saw a tough competition take place between the Cutters and Southern Regional at South Brunswick High School.
The coach of the Cutters, Peter Zisa, spoke after the match and commented, "I don't know that we were favored. Southern was the two-time state champions for a reason. A 7-0 lead would be a knockout for us against most teams, but not them. You could see their
resiliency. They kept fighting hard and we were fortunate to come out with a win."
The start of the first set of the game saw Fair Lawn establish a leading position at 16-8 after a bit of struggle. Southern Regional did not give up and kept on trailing behind but could not stop the Cutters from extending their lead to 21-14. In order to
break the momentum of Fair Lawn, Southern Regional decided to call for a time out. However, this did not stop Fair Lawn from marching ahead to secure the opening set of the game at 25-17.
Soaring on the confidence generated by winning the first set, Fair Lawn started off the second set in a dominating fashion as well. They were able to take the lead early on at 8-1 that further pressurized Southern Regional. However, Southern Regional responded
by restricting Fair Lawn from extending their advantage and pushing up their score to reach within 11-10. The Cutters were able to put on a spurt of points and move ahead but Southern Regional stayed close at 23-22 and 24-23. However, it was Fair Lawn that
was able to seal the deal on Southern Regional at 25-23.
With their grand win over Southern Regional, Fair Lawn has been able to end their season with an impressive performance record that shows a total of 37 wins made at the expense of only two losses. What is more commendable is the fact that Fair Lawn did not
lose a single set in the entire state tournament.
In contrast to the performance statistics of Fair Lawn, Southern Regional’s record falls slightly short. Southern Regional wrapped up their season with 25 wins after suffering eight losses in all.
