Fairly new to guitar.....i am wondering about chord progressions.

I am wondering what chord progressions are used for. are these the only chords that sound good together while playing in a certain major key?

  2. A chord progression is simply the sequence of chords that harmonizes a given song or melody.

    They're not necessarily the only chords that will sound good together when playing in a given key. A LOT of folk, blues, country and rock songs use only the I, IV and V chords of the key; in these cases there are additional chords in the key that aren't being used, namely the ii, iii, iv, and vii diminished.

    OTOH, there are a lot of jazz and pop songs that use chords that are outside the key (in effect the song modulates to a different key for a measure or two and then goes back to the original key).
