  2. Very illegal. There was a mom in my state who did the same thing and if I remember correctly she was fined and sent to jail. However there are legal ways to change schools if you are unhappy with one.

  3. Check with the school before doing anything hasty; some districts have "open enrollment", meaning a child can attend a district that is not his own free of charge. Otherwise, there IS an annual fee, and from what I hear it can be pretty costly.

In that event, talk with the district and explain this situation. If the school he wants to intend does, in fact, have a curriculium which his current school doesn't, the school should be obligated to admit him free of charge.

  4. You wont go to jail.  But there are loop holes to this....If the school is in your SAME district.

The reason why this is illegal is because your property taxes fund the department of education.  There is NO LOOPHOLE if this school is not in your district.

If there is a program at that school that your home school doesn't offer, you could try begging the principal. (there is a highschool out here with a really cool agriculture program, and they allow other kids in to join..)  She is allowed to sign off and approve "intra-district transfers". Talk about your son's GPA, is goals, attendance, and behavior.  This is all taken into consideration.  I see it happen all the time.  Educators have the child's best interest in mind - remember that.  If its a "go" then the only thing that could mess his "spot" up would be tardies, absences, or misconduct.

If this school is out of district, you could go to court for this.  Big trouble - yes.  Jail, unlikely.  Every school is assigned a truant officer who yes - makes home visits and checks if you live there.  They want to see proof of it too.  They look for clothes - clean and dirty, sleeping areas, etc.. You will be penalized for tuition.  Yes, tuition.  I have seen this happen - even to teacher's children - teachers who live out of the district they teach in and decide to have their children go to the school they teach in.  Remember, I said that property tax pays for public education, and if you are living in  another district, your "taxes" go to that district.

The last time I saw this happen, The parent was entitled to pay back $9.00 a day.  It was CRAZY.

P.S...IT isnt easy for kids to hide it if their test scores are low.  Teachers are really onto kids with low test scores these days - because they want to help the kid, and the moment they find out the kids is not in the right area....things happen to let it be "someone Else's problem."

If you want my opinion...Im a teacher, and if I knew a kid was supposed to be somewhere else, but he had a genuine interest in his education, i could care less about it.  Id be happy to teach him.

but try.  Remember that they wont turn a kid down if this means success for him.  They will if it is just convenient for your job, or if the school is crowded.    Good luck!
