Why are there plastic bits of fake lettuce (or parsley, or grass. anyone's guess) in containers of sushi? What are they supposed to accomplish? Would these sushi-makers go under if they splurged a little and added a real leaf of something?

  1. now days it's just used for decoration.  i worked in a restaurant in hawaii and we put them in all of our bento lunches.

    aloha!

  2. hahaha. decoration! it just looks prettier. and yeah, real leaves would wilt. :S

  3. Usually there's a little blob of wasabi there.  The paper green thing keeps it from touching the sushi.  Some companies now put the wasabi in its own packet, but I think the tradition of the little green thing just stuck.

A  real green leaf would wilt.  It could also make the sushi soggy.

  4. They are there for decoration.
