Fake injury: Pittsburgh Steelers receive $35K, Emmanuel Sanders $15K fines – NFL News
The National Football League (NFL) has said that it has not found any evidence that the Pittsburgh Steelers as an organisation were involved in condoning faking of injuries by any of their players but the office yet slapped $35,000 fine on them for faking
of an injury by wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders in their game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Sanders has also received a penalty of $15,000.
If the Steelers had been found instructing faking of an injury to Sanders or any other player, the fine amount would have been higher, the league’s executive vice president football operations Ray Anderson said in a letter to Steelers general manager Kevin
Colbert.
Ray said:
"If I believed that to be the case, the discipline would be substantially more. Instead, it reflects the commissioner's strong view that it is the responsibility of the club to insure that its players are familiar with and in compliance with the league's
competitive rules."
The vice president said that video evidence proved contrary to Sanders’ contention that he was in severe pain while as a matter of fact he was faking his injury.
He further said:
"The video of the play shows Sanders running swiftly and effortlessly toward the punted ball, and then leaving the field with no sign of discomfort. Sanders also played the rest of the game without difficulty."
According to details, Sanders during fourth quarter of the game with the Bengals, which was won by the Steelers, caught back of his leg and collapsed. He was helped on the sidelines by the team's trainer and returned on the field fully fit after missing
only a play.
He was running all fine and, in fact, outran some of his colleague in the next play. The league office after going through the video evidence has imposed the penalty as they did not see any evidence of an injury to the player.
Meanwhile, the league office has also announced slapping of fines on some other players for violations of rules and discipline during respective games.
