I cannot swim, although as a kid I was able to paddle backwards with my feet with a PFD on. In the event of such a situation, what are the strokes I must use to either swim to shore, or stand upright? Keep in mind there is a moderate current.

  1. The term, 'life jacket' is a misnomer; try, personal flotation device or PFD. Use dog paddle or breast strokes to swim to shore. Be sure the PFD fits or is the correct size and has a crotch strap. Be sure it is  fastened or buttoned. Improperly fitted or worn PFDs can slip off. Some canoe/kayak schools require students to demonstrate an ability to swim to shore after an upset.

  2. if you lay backwards and do a backstroke paddel with your arms and kick with your legs, is probably the best way, if your wearing a PFD your going to be pretty safe anyway.
