Question:

False positive pregnancy tests after miscarriage?

I just had my 3rd miscarriage in mid-July. The last blood work I had last month was negative. I took a couple of tests after that, which were also negative. I haven't had any bleeding since the light bleeding and a few clots when I first found out I was pregnant. I thought that I was getting ready to start my period because my b*****s started hurting. They hurt worse than they normally do and something told me to take a test and it came back positive. Including that test, I had 3 tests this weekend. I saw my regular doctor this morning and the urine test done in the office was faint. The blood work done came back showing the hCG but my doctor isn't quite sure if it's a new pregnancy or if it's from my miscarriage. It has been about 3 weeks since my miscarriage. My doctor told me that even after a month, if the hormone is still in your system, you can get a false positive.

I'm going to see a fertility specialist tomorrow for genetic counseling so hopefully he will be able to tell me more.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this and if so, how did things turn out? I am very confused and could use any advise that I could get.

  1. If you have had any negative HPT results since your m/c, then this is a very good sign for possible pregnancy. Be sure to do the same brand of test tomorrow morning, so that you can compare the faintness. hCG can hang around for 6 weeks, but this all really depends on how advanced the pregnancy was. If it was an early m/c the hCG will leave your system quickly. I think this all sounds good, but be sure to have a BETA blood test soon, so they can means the actual hCG levels and monitor its growth over the next few weeks. Good luck!
