Question:

False vs. Real pregnancy in dogs?

I adopted a female pit bull pup last month and I know she just had her heat in June. I do plan to have her fixed but found yesterday that she is producing milk and have noticed her mood has completely altered. She seems very tired and all she wants to do is snuggle up to someone. I am convinced that she is pregnant and close to delivery but in doing some research I found that it is not uncommon for dogs to have false pregnancies. How can I tell if she is indeed pregnant? I have felt her abdomen and I am unable to detect and distinct movement. She has an appointment with her vet but I am going crazy wondering if she is pregnant or not! HELP?!?!

  1. If you had adopted this dog from a rescue I would have thought they would have spayed prior to placement.

Did you adopt this dog from an individual?

Females can produce milk in a false whelp.  Puppies show movement closer to delivery date.  If you know the actual date she was in season you should be able to calculate exactly how many weeks since her heat and then determine how many weeks she could be pregnant.

If you're going to the vet I imagine he/she could do a blood test, palpate, ultrasound or x-ray to confirm pregnancy.

If she is pregnant you can't do much about it right now so quit making yourself crazy.

  2. vet.

They can tell you if she is pregnant or if there is a breast infection.  This is a new dog to you so she should be checked out anyways.

  3. ultrasound will have your answer.,,, where did you adopt the dog

  4. we have an apbt that had a false pregnancy.  pits are prone to them.  she went into heat a few days before she was scheduled to be spayed.  she also had pyometra, which can be fatal.  i dont know any other way to tell if she preg than to take her to the vet.  good luck
