  1. Look up the US Census records.  Google it.  Set up a family tree on one of the heritage sites. www.genesreunited.com is a good one.

  2. There are a number of sites that would be good. As you live in the US, I would suggest you join "Ancestry.com".  You can compile your tree on their site along with being able to contact other people looking at similar people.

To compile your family tree, and your family history, I suggest you speak with your parents and grandparents and write down their recollections. You must remember that often the "Oral History" of a family will often have  major inaccuracies in them. I would then suggest you obtain marriage, birth and death certificates from your parents and grandparents.

Start putting the immediate family into a tree (on Ancestry.com or 'genesreunited.com.uk').

Once you have the immediate family listed, you can look at/look for matches in other family trees on the site and then contact the person whose tree has a "match".  From there you will quickly start building a tree and locating information about common ancestors.

I would also suggest you look at other Genealogy sites.  Cyndys List is a good one. Also sites that list ship passenger lists, Your State Archive site and also the Federal Archive sites are important for marriage, death and birth information. Look at some "Cemetery" sites for where people have been buried.

I would also suggest that you join a site that is specific for your family name. There may even be a DNA family test site looking into matches of people of a specific family tree. If there is one, send off you DNA and have it tested. As a female, you will also be able to find out which of the five "Prime Mothers" group you belong to.

I would not rely on the "Mormon Genealogy site" as it is often inaccurate as they often do not verify a blood connection between people -- just that the names and dates match.

I hope you have a good experience looking into your family genealogy and family history.

  3. No offense intended, but before you start spending money, go to the Mormon Church. LDS.com. They then have a drop down menu, click on Genealogy. You'll be amazed.

The Genealogy section of Answers should be able to help, as well.

  4. You might get better answers by posting this question in the genealogy section.

Family Search.org has a good 'getting started' guide.
