Question:

Family Research --- Free BMD search after 1945?

Does anyone know of a site where I can get later info. I have ancestors born 1890's/1900 with no trace of having died! I guess they are a bit fragile by now!

I've tried most of the BMD sites free and to pay and found 'freebmd.org.uk' v good but is not fully transcribed yet. Any suggestions please. Also does any one know if there is any access/help online to historic Coronor's Records?

  1. UK answer.

In my opinion the best site for the BMD index is www.ancestry.co.uk  they have indice up to 31st December 2005. This is the years they cover.

Complete BMD Index ranges & Images 1837-1983

    Complete BMD Indexes 1984-2005

What the other person said about you having to trawl through the indice to find the  BMD record after 1920 until you find what you are searching for, its like that anyway unless you have a date for the life event, no matter what year it is.

As for the coroners report being on line, no there is nothing freely available to the public on line in respect of the coroners report.

You would need to contact the coroners office for the city or town that dealt with the inquest. Here in Nottingham you have to supply an audio cassette for a recording of the hearing, you cannot have a written copy.

If you would like me to search the index on ancestry.co.uk I am quite happy to help. You can either edit your question or you can email me through my yahoo profile.

    Hope this helps.

  2. I found everything from Genes Reunited, by searching the BMD records they have. Note that they do charge you for this, so if you know the month or year, then you can search under the quarters for each year. On GR they ask you to buy credits that expire in 7 days, so you may choose to do all of your research in one hit, eg over a weekend.

If you're searching after 1984, you just enter the name, and the results come up immediately. This is because post 1984, the BMDs have been computerised, therefore you don't need to go through all of the page scans. Good luck.

  3. Coroners records are a tricky area, you are probably best to search the local papers.

If you post the details you have maybe we can help.

  4. Familyrelatives have BMDs transcribed from 1866 to 1920

Ancestry and find my past have them transcribed from 1984 to 2005.

Anything in between 1920 and 1984, it is a case of trawling year by year through the scanned pages

Deaths are particularly difficult to find, as you dont have anything to go on, especially after the 1901 census.
