Question:

Family Tree Programme?

by  |  earlier

Hi,

I want to do a study on my surname (it is very rare), I've realised I'm going to need a programme where I can easily create separate family groups up, but also one where I'll be able to link people together easily when I find links.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks

  1. If you are going to do some serious research and want the best tool available then get The Master Genealogist. Not only will it store trees and exhibits it will also make it easier to record your future research needs as well.

I have used maybe 6 or more family tree programmes over the years and TMG is by far the most complete and the best supported. I have nearly 20,000 people in mine belonging to over 200 trees and it does the job really well.

  2. Family Tree legends is a good one. Or you can keep it online and join up with other family trees using Ancestry.com

  3. Try Genes Reunited, its £10 a year but if you put in what you already have and the name is that rare im am sure it wont take long for you to find lots of like minded people. I have the Who do you think family tree software as well. You can create as many seperate families as you need on that one.

  4. I got Family Tree Marker by ancestry.com I think it's good and you can work online or off I got mine at Sam's Club but I think Wal-Mart and Staples have it to.

  5. The Church of Latter day Saints have a **free** program for compiling family trees.  Its called PAF (Personal Ancestry File).  I use it, it's straightforward and with no eccentricities.

You can get it by looking up downloads on the CLS Search web site

  6. I use Family Historian - but mainly as a tool for building my own family tree. However I see no problem in doing what you want to do with it.

By the way, Have you checked with the guild of one name studies to make sure that your surname has not already been researched? http://www.one-name.org/

  7. I use Legacy 6.0 it's free off the i-net.
