  1. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS or "Mormon") are really big into genealogy. Their site is completely free and they have a crazy big database.

    www.familysearch.org

  2. um heres a website http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/genesreun...  hope  this helps :)

  3. You need to put the work in, but a site that can help is

    www.familysearch.org

    and

    www.rootsweb.com

these might just point you in the right direction

  4. Myheritage.com is wonderful . You can put a family tree on there and the site will match you up to other families who have the same ancestors . The site also has genealogy helps and lots of fun stuff and its free

  5. Read my tips:

You should start by asking all your living relatives about family history.  Then, armed with that information, you can go to your public library and check to see if it has a genealogy department.  Most do nowadays; also, don't forget to check at community colleges, universities, etc.  Our public library has both www.ancestry.com and www.heritagequest.com free for anyone to use (no library card required).

Another place to check out is any of the Mormon's Family History Centers.  They allow people to search for their family history (and, NO, they don't try to convert you).

A third option is one of the following websites:

    http://www.searchforancestors.com/...

    http://www.censusrecords.net/?o_xid=2739...

    http://www.usgenweb.com/

    http://www.census.gov/

    http://www.rootsweb.com/

    http://www.ukgenweb.com/

    http://www.archives.gov/

    http://www.familysearch.org/

    http://www.accessgenealogy.com/...

    http://www.cyndislist.com/

    http://www.geni.com/

Cyndi's has the most links to genealogy websites, whether ship's passenger lists, ancestors from Africa, ancestors from the Philippines, where ever and whatever.

Of course, you may be successful by googling: "john doe, born 1620, plimouth, massachusetts" as an example.

    Good luck and have fun!

Check out this article on five great free genealogy websites:

Then there is the DNA test; if you decide you want to REALLY know where your ancestors came from opt for the DNA test. Besides all the mistakes that officials commonly make, from 10% to 20% of birth certificates list the father wrong; that is, mama was doing the hanky-panky and someone else was the REAL father. That won't show up on the internet or in books; it WILL show up in DNA.

I used www.familytreedna.com which works with the National Geographics Genotype Program.

  6. i started with genesreunited ,not a bad site you can spend as much or as little as you like on your research. It helped me get back to nearly the 1500's by asking questions on the site.I still have much research to do ,but genes is a good place to start .I think Ancestry.com are doing a 14day free trial

  7. Unfortuantely there are no "free" search sites.

To really tarce your family you need to access Census returns and htese come at a cost OR, if you live in the UK speak to your local library as they will have a list of libraries that keep the census returns on microfiche and, to the best of my knowledge, they don't charge for a search...only if you print out.

If you are searching online then try

ancestry.co.uk (or .com if it's in US

    genesreunited.co.uk

both good for UK census searches  and both offer a pay per view system.

Then try http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.p... - you can do name searches and this will bring up birth index records. They won't tell you the month a person was born but will tell you in which quarter of the year the birth was registered. You can do BIrth, Marriage and Death searches AND it's FREE!!!!

Then there is http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.... this is the Church of Latter Day Saints (The Mormon Church) - again this is a freebie

If your search is in the Uk then do a search and see if there are any message boards or forums helping with genealogy in your area. The people on these sites are a brilliant source of help and some will do searches for you free

    Hope this has helped

  8. I'm having the same problem, I went through the library. the library lets you research for free through ancestry.com you can do some of it on their free trial but if you get a library card and use the libraries computer the website is free to use. it is on the libraries account. I'm at a road block with my family tree still trying to track down three people. as far back as the 1800's. I just started and will be visiting the library today to take advantage of their free geneology search.
