Is there an online site which is free that helps with your search of past relatives...

ie a search engine where you type in the name of the relative you have and where they lived and in which date etc, and you then got lists/ records of perhaps like who was living with them? or who they were related to? etc?

thanks lol

  1. www.familysearch.org--the Mormon site--is free

www.rootsweb.com--sister site of ancestry.com--is also free

and there is also free trial memberships (up to 2 weeks) at www.ancestry.com.

If all else fails, just type in "free genealogy sites" in a search engine like Yahoo, Google, etc. and you'd be amazed at the number of them available. This is how I got started.

  2. USGENWEB ARCHIVES by County/State

The State Archives (Whichever State you are looking for some have more than others)

    AHGP Sites

You can go to your local Public library and probably get

    ancestry.com there for free. ASK...

also see if they have a genealogy branch or location or room.

Check with the local morman church for a local Family History Library.

  3. I have not found one

  4. Not really.  Now, your public library might have a subscription to Ancestry.Com you can use.  Ancestry.Com has lots of records online and seems to be getting more all the time.  They have all the U.S. censuses through 1930. The 1940 and later are not available to the public yet. They have U.K. censuses also.

Just don't take as absolute fact everything you see in family trees on ANY website, free or paid. The information is subscriber submitted and mostly not documented or poorly documented.  Even when you see the same info repeatedly by many different subscribers, that is no guarantee it is correct.  A lot of people copy without verifying.  The information can be valuable as CLUES as to where to get the documentation.

Another source is a Family History Center at a Latter Day Saints(Mormon) Church. They have records on people all over the world, not just Mormons.  You need to find out their hours for the general public.  In Salt Lake City, they have the world's largest genealogical collection.  Their Family History Centers can order microfilm for you to view at a nominal fee.  Their website FamilySearch.org and the Rootsweb site are 2 good free sites and they have good instructions on genealogy.

I have never had them to try and convert me or send their missionaries by to ring my doorbell.  I haven't heard of them doing that to anyone else either.

But first, John, start with your living family, particularly your senior members.  Tape them if they will let you.  Now, they might be confused on some things, but what might seem to be insignificant story telling might turn out to be very significant. Find out if any family has any old family bibles.  Ask to see and make copies of birth, marriage and death certificates. Also depending on the religious faith, baptismal, first communion, confirmation, marriage records can have parent information.

While you are at your library and the Family History Center, you will probably have an excellent opportunity to talk with other researchers and that is how people learn, talking and sharing experiences with others.

    Good Luck!

  5. Lots!!!

    Depends where you live, though!

The information you describe will be on a census. Certain census indexes are free to check and the best sites for these are familysearch.org or ancestry.com - use the register free option. Family searc will also give some info on ancestors but usually 100 years or more old records

If you want BirthMarriageDeath details these will vary by country.

UK registration started 1837, so nothing was formally registered before this year except for Church records.

The best way to find information is to contact others with the same name interest. That is the most popular and common form of research at present.

Genesreunitedcom is the top UK site, there's also curiousfox.org in the US, Rootsweb.com etc.

Just type your country and "genealogy" into any search  engine!
