Family and Households?

What are the differences between a family and a household? Can you think of an example of a household in American society that would not be considered a family?

A family is a bunch of people who are related to each other.

A household is a bunch of people who live together.

So, if three people, say, rent a house and are roomies, it's a household, but they aren't a family, sinc ethey aren't related.

The difference between a family and a household is that members of a family are related by blood or marriage, whereas all members of a household need not be so related.

An example in America might be the home of a rich man who employs many living-in servants. Only those in the home related to the owner by blood or by marriage can be called family, whereas all of the people living at that address, i.e. family and servants together, can be called a household.

I would think that group homes would be considered households but not family. Also, half-way houses would probably be considered households and not family.

I think the difference between family and household would be how in the inhabitants of the house feel about one another.

I think of family as a parent/parents and child/children. I think of a household as any group living together under one roof such as another relative, or  maybe roommates, maybe someone rents a room with a family, etc. I do numerous surveys and that is how they determine a living situation.

A household implies living in the same dwelling. My mother doesn't live with me, but she is part of my family. Perhaps roommates that don't each other well would be a household but not a family.

A family connotes a blood connection. "Blended families" are when a couple remarries each bringing their children to the family.

Household? Sorority House, Fraternity House, couple living together, nursing home in addition to the already mentioned examples.
