  1. I can't t give you  site.. only an idea. I've never heard the name 'snyman' before.  Many peoples family names have changed over the centuries for different reasons.  My name is Pratt.. which stems from the french word Prou.  Maybe talk to some elder famliy members, or do some research and make sure your name didn't change a tiny bit over the years.

  2. try this

    http://www.historicalnames.com/namelistd...

  3. Not all families had family Crests you know?

    Look under Heraldry sites?

  4. I searched all the places I'm aware of (and where I found my family crest) and found no crest for the Snyman name.

    Not every family has one....

Are you sure its an original spelling of your name?

    I started the search here:

  5. There is no such thing as a family crest.

Any one of the regulars on the genealogy board can give you websites to scam merchants selling coats of arms like they belong to everyone with a particular surname.  They don't.

A crest is part of a coat of arms. Coats of arms do not belong to surnames.  They were and are granted to individuals and are passed down through the direct legitimate male line of descent.  Actually, in some cases, there might have been, for instance, 15 different men with the same surname each granted their own coat of arms, all different.  Then many men with that surname were never granted a coat of arms.

No one peddler that sells them on the internet, at shopping malls, at airports, in magazines will have all 15, no way. They don't need to in order to sell to gullible people.  The only time any one of them will have more than one is if more than one person with the same surname from different national origins  were granted one, then they will have one of each when in fact there might have been several of each.

The surname product business which includes coats of arms is one of the bigggest scams around.  Frequently what they have are valid coats of arms but what isn't valid is they sell them like they belong to everyone with a particular surname.

Anytime you see one of the little walnut plaques. with a coat of arms on it and often a family history to go along with it on someone's den wall, what you are looking at is a coat of arms granted to someone with their surname and might not even be related.  The only reason not to laugh is that it isn't polite to laugh at people in their own homes.  This also applies to people who have a coffee mug, keychain or Tshirt with a coat of arms on it. The coat of arms might be valid but most likely it doesn't belong to that person.

See the links below, one from the British College of Arms(they grant coats of arms and if you feel your father or your husband is entitled to one, you need to send them your family history so they can see if they can grant you one),  and one link from the most prestigious genealogical organization in the U.S., The National Genealogical Society.

If this is a school project, please print off the 2 links and give them to your teacher.
