  1. You can sail right out of San Diego to the Mexican riveria. No matter what ship you go on(i love princess cruise lines), kids will have a blast. Most ships have all kinds of activities for kids and adults alike. They always have plenty of food that kids like. They will have a hard time choosing. I have seen kids as young as like about 9 months to 100 years old, so no problem there.

  2. Well, if you can sail out of San Diego or Los Angeles you have a bunch of options -- Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess or Holland America Line (though HAL sails there only in the spring, winter and autumn).

It really depends on what you and your family like.  I'd encourage you to check out CruiseSavvy guide to choosing a cruise -- it'll explain how different cruises are different:

One thing I would add, though is that Carnival Pride out of Los Angeles is probably NOT appropriate for most kids.  There's a lot of, um, Renaissance artwork of the nude form.  Here's a cruise journal with some pictures from Pride:

The picture labeled "Scandalous Art" -- which is of a wall in a main hallway -- may be art, but not everyone would feel comfortable with this around children (or grandparents).

  3. Last year I went on the Carnival Pride to the Mexican Riviera.  It was a lot of fun for me (15) but I don't think it would have been appropriate for some of the younger kids to see some of the things people were doing.  You should probably try going on Royal Caribbean with young kids.  I'd say it is more family-ish.  Try the Vision of the Seas :) which is a one week long cruise with 3 days at sea and 3 days in port.  The ports are Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and Mazatlan.  The Carnival Pride went to these same ports and they were great :)  Not quite as nice as the Caribbean though.
