Are there any cheap, fun, family friendly places and things to do in DR where not so many tourists go to? (include hotel/villa)

We have 3 children (12 y, girl, 8 and 5 y, boys) and planning to go to Dominican Republic this summer for a week. We're planning to go to some places in East Coast (U.S.), so we're trying not to spend too much money on this trip.

We wish to see/do things in DR but wish to avoid where tourists go to. My husband speaks Spanish so we won't have any language issues.

All the places I see in the internet is just a little too much for us.

Any ideas from Dominicans or anybody!!??

  2. If you think you are going to go to the DR on the cheap, with 3 young children and have a marvelous and fun trip... on the cheap... then you are setting yourself up for a terrible experience.

The WORST hotel I have EVER stayed in... ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD was in Santo Domingo... I only stayed one night because the plane got in late and it was the first time I had been to the DR and I just wanted to get to a hotel... I was covered with bed bug bites and the walls looked like they were moving from the COCKROACHES.

If you are going to the DR with 3 small children... then don't think you can do it on the CHEAP and not have a bad experience, because you can't.

  5. If your husband speaks Spanish I would recommend him to visit this web page (http://nuestroshijos.com.do/app/frontpag... and click on events; in there you will find a calendar with things that you can bring your kids to.

By experience I could say you can bring them to the water front called el Puerto or El Malecon, it has plazas and sometimes live music depending on the time of the year (is better if you go there after 6pm when the sun is gone). Start by walking through El Conde (walking street with lots of commercial spots) and at the end of the street there is a big plaza with doves and resting place (this is the colonial zone). Once in that area ask how to get to the Alcazar, this is where Christopher Columbus’ son built his house, it has a huge plaza that has a view to El Puerto. Also try to visit la Plaza de la Cultura (ave. Maximo Gomez) this is a huge block dedicated to the DR culture with very cheap museums (there are discounts for kids). Another cheap spot is an under ground cave called Los Tres Ojos they will enjoy seeing that, oh and the National zoo; you won’t believe how cheap things are in DR. Have fun!
