  1. You can't see medical records on-line. The fact someone's grandmother gave birth twice before she was married and was treated for STD's every two months until she retired from Little Louie's House of Love is sort of private.

Birth dates for living people are private too, for fear crooks will steal their identity.

Your grandmother's children were probably born sometime between 1935, when she was 16, and 1965, when she was 46. That is basic biology, not mind-reading. Most of her children are probably still alive, unless they were killed in a war, by accident or disease.

Your parents may be in contact with their brothers and sisters. Some do, some don't. Some never do overlook that $500 loan that was never paid back, or the remark about lumpy gravy. If they are in contact, tell them you are interested in family history and ask.

If grandma and grandpa got married in June and had their first child in September, you may find they added one to the birth year of the first-born. That happens all the time.

  2. Medical records are confidential. The other concern is that her children would all be born after 1930.. and if you are in the US, that is the most recent the census is open for research.

A lot depends on being more specific as to where you are.. if you are in the UK, there is the BND (birth-marriage-death) index, that can be searched.  In the US, it is 'hit/miss' as to which states have birth indexes online, etc. SOME counties in Texas, for example.. have posted files with birth registries. The Texas birth index (for the state) is accessible through ancestry.com.

Yahoo does not allow private info about living persons to be posted here. Thus, it would not be right to post birthdates for dad/mom (or siblings) in public, although many of us will help off the board. Once you are in older records (persons dead), things open up a lot.

Aside from privacy issues.. the more you include in your question, the better your results will be. We do have contributors here both in the US and the UK.   Perhaps there are issues directly in the family, but it also is often advised that you ask family members directly.

For grandma herself.. you can use the social security death index (again..US) to find exact dates for her birth/death. If you are reasonably sure of where she was born or raised, we can also often do a lookup in ancestry for you, and provide you with census records. That can take you WAY back.

  3. In the U. S., each state has its own laws about who, when and where a person can obtain vital records on another person.

For instance in Texas, if you are not immediate family, you can order a death certificate (online if you live in Texas) on a person 25 years after they have died.  For a birth certificate they have increased it from 50 to 75 years after they were born, if you are not immediate family(this can be ordered on line if you live inTexas).

Identity theft has caused most states to clamp down on these records.

You really don't need medical records for somethiing like that. Medical Records are very private and are protected by HIPAA and definitely will not be online.

  4. Check with the registar!!

  5. Depending on what state they were born in you may be able to find the births on the net by doing a search for"Vital Records" for that state.

Not all states will release the records so they may not be on the net.

Most hospitals put their records on microfiche but destroy them after 25 years. They may also have a policy of No Release of information except to the birth mother. But it is worth a try if you know the hospital.

  6. Archives at the libary nearest to the hospital
