  2. People here will help some, but it is awkward. We do best with specific questions - like "Who were the parents of Malinda McCorkle, b. 1876 in Pocatello, Idaho?", not "please help me".

If you are in the USA, look in the yellow pages under Churches - Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. Those are the Mormons by a longer name. The biggest LDS church in your county will probably have a Family History Center. FHC's, in turn, are open to everyone, Mormon or not, and they are free. (They do charge 15 cents a page to print things, but you can store your work in Notepad and mail it to yourself.) They are staffed by friendly, almost always elderly, people who know lots and lots and are always eager to help. They don't push their religion on you. The volunteers at the FHC I go to don't even mention it.

FHC's have tons of resources on CD's, fast internet connections and access to census images. Plus, they have the volunteers to tell you what to do, show you where to look and guide you in your search.

You do have to (or should, out of politeness) wear clothes suitable for a church on a weekday, and you'll have to call to see when they are open, but they are the best deal around for someone interested in family history.

  3. If you will send me what you have I will help all I can. I have resources that might not be available to you. This is free work I do for many people.

  4. I belong to Ancestory.com. A lot depends on your last name, like if it's Smith we have a problem, but I could run a search, and see what comes up. I guess it's OK to give an e-mail address here, mine is bccpaul@verizon.net. If you want send me any info you can provide, like the city, and state your familly is from. Paul
