The food is put in bowls and passed around the table for everyone to scoop their food out of and put on their plates

One of the best family style meals I ever had, in a restaurant, was at the old school house near Fort Ticonderoga.  Is it still in business?

The other style service is 'Restaurant", where the food comes out of the kitchen already on your plate. If you were having dinner with the Rockefeller family, you might get this at their house. Some restaurants have "family style" service, but not many.
