Question:

Family values? Did Jesus teach anything like that, or did he ignore his own family when they came to see him?

Mary and the brothers of Jesus came to hear him preach, but Jesus sent a message to them that his disciples are his real family. And it appears that he left them standing outside.

Where did Jesus emphasize this "Family Values" thing I hear so much about? Is that another one of those things that people want to hear and just promote it without doing the research?

More and the source is in my biography.

  1. Oh, please. Jesus was a Jewish man with a big Jewish family. Of course he was close with his parents and siblings!

For some reason the Church has edited out all traces of the Jewish family that Jesus was part of.

  2. Matthew 10:34-37:

Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

    Luke 14:26:

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

Jesus didnt disown that He was the firstborn son of a couple that lived in that place; He just told the countrymen that He considers as family His disciples.

  4. Jesus used even that opportunity to teach a point which many miss.

If you wish to accuse Jesus of NOT having family values, you stand on shaky ground.

Here then-pose that as a statement, then consider the entirety of scripture. And do not forget that Jesus IS God.

So, other than creating the family, what else has God done for it?

If this is not sufficient, consider even this one example of Jesus paying heed to the family-John chapter 19, we find Jesus leaving His mother to the care of John. Clearly, as eldest son with a (presumably) widowed Mother, it was His obligation to take care for her. When no longer in the position (earthly) to do so, He charged John with her care.

And let us not forget the fact that the scriptures are inspired by God. These same scriptures do say much about caring for the family.

  5. Jesus was the b*****d son of an unwed teenager and he himself remained a bachelor all his life, what family values do you think someone like that could instill on anyone?

  6. If you read all the accounts about Jesus and his family, you will find that his brothers rejected his claims, and through that he was "nuts". They came with the intend of physically removing him from the meeting and locking him away.  So of course, he avoided them at that time.

If you continue to read, you will find that after his resurrection Jesus made a special point of appearing to at least one of his brothers (James) individually, and trained him to become the first pastor of the Jerusalem church.  He also called his brother Jude to be an apostle and author of one the NT books.

He also performed at least one miracle at the specific instruction of his mother as a favor to her (see John chapter 2).

Jesus did support the idea of a strong family, but he did not allow their unbelief to restrict his commitment to doing the will of God in his life.  That is in keeping with the "family values" often refered to today.

  7. "Family values" doesn't mean valuing your family, it's just a code word for the religious right's stance on sexual morality.  Despite the name it has nothing to do with families.

  8. Well, look at the source of Jesus's teachings.  Buddhism and Ancient Greek philosophy.  You'd get better answers there, too.

But yeah, you have a point. There's a lot of things people claim (like the USA being based on christian values and founded by christians).

  9. Jesus taught that our first live should be God the Father. Why? Because he is the source of all that is. He is the Creator.

Our lives here on earth are temporal. So are our relationships, including family. All that we have here will someday fade away, but our treasures in heaven are for eternity.
