Famous Name prevails in the Group 3 Jockey Club of Turkey Meld Stakes at Leopardstown
The Dermot Weld trained, Famous Name, was sent as the 30 to 100 shot in the Group 3 Jockey Club of Turkey Meld Stakes at Leopardstown on 26th July, 2012, and lived up to all the expectations when he secured victory in the 1
mile and 1 furlong race with rider Pat Smullen aboard.
The seven-year-old kept the competition at bay as he posted a 5 ½ length victory over, Ballybacka Lady, who was paired with rider Fran Berry, while Native Khan, ridden by Johnny Murtagh finished in third place.
Weld was pleased with the way the runner has been performing as he told the press:
"That is his eighteenth win and seventeen of those have come at either Listed or Group level. He must be getting close to a record total of Stakes race wins.”
Regarding the future plans of the bay horse, the trainer commented:
"We toyed with the idea of going to Germany on Sunday but it would have took four days to get there and the temperature is 30 degrees. There is a lot of thunderstorms forecast for there on Sunday as well.”
The trainer has settled on the Royal Whip at the Curragh but, also holds an entry in the Irish Champion Stakes.
Prior to this, the Khalid Abdullah owned runner raced as a favourite at the Curragh and took home the money in the Group 3 Friarstown Stud International Stakes on 1st July, 2012.
Over 1 mile and 2 furlongs, he finished 3 ¾ lengths ahead of, Defining Year while Native Khan finished third.
The son of Dansili, out of mare Fame At Last, has a pretty impressive record of 18-8-5 in 35 starts. He shows no signs of slowing down and is set to collect more victories.
Leopardstown also proved to be lucky for the Jessie Harrington trained, Fairy Wing, who succeeded in the Morocco SOREC Handicap on the same card, held over a distance of seven furlongs.
Ridden by Fran Berry, the five-year-old gelding raced as a favourite with a 3-1 shot, and justified it when he finished 3 lengths ahead of the Michael Mulvany trained, Jembatt while, Dash Back, finished third.
